The Johns Hopkins Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Dysplasia (ARVD) program was established in 1999 through the combined efforts of several Hopkins cardiologists who partnered with several families affected by this condition. The mission of the Johns Hopkins ARVD Program is three fold. One goal is to provide education for patients and physicians about ARVD. A second goal is to facilitate the evaluation and management of patients with known or suspected ARVD. And the third, and most important goal is to provide new knowledge of ARVD.
The ARVD program staff is available for formal consultations and second opinions regarding their diagnosis or possible diagnosis of ARVD. A full day of testing can be arranged by one of our coordinators/genetic counselors. A complete ARVD evaluation consists of an electrocardiogram, signal averaged electrocardiogram, exercise tolerance test, echocardiogram, cardiac MRI or cardiac CT, and 24 hour Holter monitor. Patients are also seen in consultation by meeting with Dr. Hugh Calkins to discuss test results and provide guidance regarding further management. Patients are invited to provide blood samples for genetic testing and participate in research studies if appropriate. If additional testing is necessary, we can also arrange for invasive testing which consists of an electrophysiology study, right ventriculogram, and endomyocardial biopsy.
